John Galbavy | Principle and Founder

From an early age, I was drawn to the intersection of nature, art, and design. As a child, I spent countless hours immersed in nature books and fascinated by the complexity of natural systems. Family vacations inevitably included detours through state parks in search of unique landscapes — and, whenever possible, carnivorous plants hidden deep within them.

That curiosity evolved into an obsession with plants, garden-design, and the experience of outdoor space. During my teens and early twenties, I cultivated an extensive plant collection while experimenting with residential garden design and working at The Home Depot. While initially pursuing fine art studies at University of Central Florida, I discovered a profession that seamlessly united art, architecture, ecology, and engineering — a natural extension of a family lineage rooted in engineering through both my father and grandfather. That discovery ultimately led me to the University of Florida Landscape Architecture program, where I immediately fell in love with the rigor, creativity, and collaborative energy of studio culture.

After nearly a decade designing alongside the talented team at David Conner + Associates, followed by experience within a large multidisciplinary engineering firm and land developer, I seeded a lifelong ambition - founding Galbavy Design Studio.

The studio is guided by the belief that meaningful landscapes emerge through careful listening, thoughtful restraint, and a deep respect for the surrounding environment and context. Each project is approached as an opportunity to create spaces that are timeless, immersive, and connected to the people who use them. Through a balance of form and function, bold planting compositions, and intentional detailing, Galbavy Design Studio strives to craft landscapes that feel both artful and enduring — places that invite participation, restore connection to nature, and enrich everyday life.
